Pulsars are rapidly spinning neutron stars, the densest known objects in the universe. As they spin, pulsars emit radiation at a very regular and sustained interval, creating something akin to lighthouses in outer space. These pulses have been used by astronomers as guideposts to map areas of the universe, navigate spacecrafts in deep space, and as clocks since their periodic rotation provides one of the most accurate time signatures ever found.
